Picnics always seem like a good idea. We have visions of a beautifully packed wicker basket full of healthy summer food and lemonade enjoyed while lounging under a tree or on the grass. But the reality doesn’t seem to live up to our expectations. We spend heaps of time chopping and assembling everything together in random containers, dragging it all out and about with us, then eating meals, that quite possibly include sand as a condiment, on floppy paper plates.
Well, we can’t really help you with the prep and planning, though we do like these helpful picnic ideas from Epicurious and the site Picnic Recipes and Games but we can help with the floppy plate dilemma.
Saakori disposable dinnerware is a more sustainable option than paper plates. Moulded from pesticide, bleach and toxin-free palm leaves, their dishes are biodegradable, microwave and freezer-safe. They make everything from your basic dinner plate to soup bowls and trays, so you can use them for packing, serving and eating, streamlining your picnic packing. They’re also very firm, allowing for one-handed holding, the use of real (ie. effective) cutlery and they make kiddie plate tipping incidents less likely.
You can use them at BBQs, picnics (but of course), on the road and they’d also be great if you’re trying to TakeOutWithout. And though they’re not the cheapest plates around we’ve found you can use them more than once – as long as they don’t get too juicy or saucy. And when you’re done you can compost them or cut them up and bury them, which sounds like a fun follow-up activity to undertake with our tots.
Now if only we could get our picnic visions to match our picnic reality we’d be all set.
Picnic planning? We’ve found the following to be very outdoor eating friendly:
- Klean Kanteen’s Wide Mouth Insulated Bottles
- Safer Summer Eating Options
- Airtight Food Storage Containers
