summer transition time

Summer is a great time to tackle potty training because your kids are wearing fewer clothes – heck they can even go bare when and if it’s appropriate – and would you rather unbutton, unsnap and unzip a snowsuit or pull down a pair of shorts? As with all kiddie transitions, potty training goes more smoothly for all concerned if you’re prepared, and training pants are a great way to start the switch from diapers to undies.
Reusable training pants also make sense from an environmental and financial point of view. We tested Bummis Trainers which are styled like underwear (though a little poofier) and have a waterproof outer layer, a cotton inner layer and a terry absorbent core that can hold one or two toddler pees while still allowing your little one to feel wet and make the association between needing to pee and what happens next. Environmentally you’re saving heaps of disposable training pants from hitting the landfill while financially you can invest in six pairs of cloth training pants for a fraction of what you’d end up spending on disposables.
Our tester found the Bummis training pants to be easy on and easy off for her toddler, who was proud to be able to take care of things herself. They were also easy to use and keep clean – as long as she washed and dried them inside out so they didn’t retain moisture – and she liked how comfy they were compared to traditional plastic pants. She found them a great night time solution as they didn’t leak (though this may need to be tested on a case by case basis) or paired with regular undies (or nothing at all) during the day to help kids get “the feeling”.
The only issue? Our tester found them a bit problematical with poo. Because you have to pull them down over your little one’s legs it can get a titch messy so we checked in with Karen from New & Green for tips. Her solution for dealing with a “code brown”? Start by getting a change mat at the ready (and wipes), take off any below-the-waist clothes your kidlet has on, take the pants down carefully and have your child them step out of them so the changing mat catches anything that falls out.
And once again we’re struck by how much more – and how much more readily – we discuss bodily functions now we’re parents.
