organic & orange
Filed Under Going Green, Places | June 1, 2010
While we’d love to go all organic all the time, a lack of time and resources has hindered our best intentions: until we found The Big Carrot that is. This one-stop shop is packed with all the greener goodies anyone could wish for, as well as heaps more help for your green journey.
A fixture on the Danforth since 1983, The Big Carrot has always been committed to organically grown, GMO-free and environmentally safe products. And it’s a worker owned co-operative so the staff are actively involved in maintaining the integrity of the products and food sold in the store. But The Big Carrot is not just about shopping, they also have an organic juice bar – but have no fear tired mamas, they also offer fair trade coffee and teas – as well as a cafe featuring organic salads and sandwiches that you can sit down in-house and enjoy or nosh on the go.
For busy mums-on-a-mission The Big Carrot is clearly laid out with great signage, making it easy to find what you need fast. And not only do they stock all the necessities for your weekly grocery shop but you can also pick up baby necessities such as toxin-free lotions and body wash, biodegradable and chlorine free diapers and wipes, all-natural sunscreens and baby bottles.
But what we love most about The Big Carrot is the registered holistic nutritionists they have on staff from Mondays to Saturdays who are happy to sit down with you to discuss your dietary needs and restrictions and who will also take you on a store tour. During our consult we learned that it is easier to go organic and become healthier by doing things in baby steps (we’re good at those) – like switching our coffee for herbal teas.
We also made use of their resource library packed with the latest books on holistic medicine, healthy eating, baking, seasonal cooking and pregnancy and family resources. They also offer handy classes and seminars and donate a percentage of their annual profits back to the community, adding a bit of crunch to “crunchy granola.”
