sewing unspooled

The funny little wedge of a block where Fraser and Kingsway meet just keeps getting better. The renaissance started when Les Faux Bourgeois opened right on the corner and then continued with the opening of Collage Collage and RubyDog’s Art House and now the block gets even craftier with the recent opening of Spool of Thread.

The creative offering of partners – in life and business – Lili Nedved and Henry Sinha, spool of thread is a sewing “lounge” offering bright modern fabrics, patterns from Collette, Amy Butler and Bird and Little Bird and sewing classes including Sewing 101 and a Father’s Day Tie Workshop on June 19th. They’ve only just opened so they have lots more in the works, including quilting classes and incoming patterns for children’s clothes from the appealing Oliver + S.

Nedved and Sinha reclaimed a small warehouse space, which took five months of intensive DIY to transform into a bright, open studio. It has polished concrete floors embedded with small collections of buttons (kids will be fascinated by these), a cash desk decorated with 150 yardsticks they collected on eBay, shelves of fabric and a collection of sewing stations featuring easy-to-use sewing machines from Janome which are self-feeding and self-threading among other magical things.

In addition to their classes you can also rent their machines by the hour, giving you both time, space and a good excuse for some kid-free time to finish those projects mouldering away in your closet.

Both crafters, Nedved and Sinha wanted to create a space that would allow others to unleash their own inner creativity. We’re pretty sure they’ve succeeded as we’re tempted by their Sewing 101 class and we haven’t sewn a stitch since we were scarred by a disastrous Home Ec project in high school.

If you’re tempted to stop by why not check it out during their grand opening soiree this Saturday, June 5th from 11 am to 6 pm? Rumour has it there’ll be giveaways and treats throughout the day.

I can’t wait for the grand opening! I had a sneak peek at Spool of Thread a couple weeks ago and it was fabulous! Looking forward to improving my garment-sewing skills. Lili and Henry are friendly and want to encourage an atmosphere of creativity.
