Summer’s here which means boating, swimming and generally trying to get close to the water whenever possible. But if you have a brand new baby it can be hard to find a floatation device to keep them safe and sound, which is why we were thrilled to get our hands on – and our babe into – the Salus Bijoux Baby Life Jacket.

Rather than a mini adult life jacket, the Salus Bijoux, from Canadian company Salus Marine, was designed specifically for a baby’s body and proportions. Made for babies from nine to 25 pounds, the design ensures your baby will turn face up in the water and the jacket has a wide collar that cradles your baby’s head and is adjustable for the safest fit for your baby’s size. It hasn’t gotten official approval from Transport Canada as by law they can’t approve any PFD for a little one under 20 pounds but they’ve still given it two thumbs up.

Admittedly our tiny tester did nothing more adventuresome in the jacket than kick about in the tub, but what a busy hour she spent splashing about on her back and how happy was her mother that she then took an extra long nap after exhausting herself with all that activity? Next up? Trying it out in the pool. It still requires heaps of hands on mama vigilance, but then when aren’t you on high alert when kids and water are involved? And just a note, be sure to adjust it before you get your babe all snugged in as it’s a bit fiddly.

Since we know that as soon as (pre)school’s out everyone will be hitting the road we wanted to include this timely reminder about PFDs, kids and safety and water safety info from the Canadian Pediatric Society.

And if you’re a little more outdoorsy than we were and plan to spend a lot of time in boats this summer then the Salus Bijoux is the best accessory you can find for your baby.

We tried every life jacket available before we found this one. This was the first lifejacket that seemed to be designed to work with baby proportions (ie they have no neck. My son screamed the whole time he was in the other ones but is quite content in this one. We love it. Thanks for letting me know why it wasn’t transport Canada approved.
