here comes the sunscreen
Filed Under Going Green, Stuff, Tips & Tricks | June 9, 2010
Last week we covered basic sun safety for tots and this week we’re back with some of our favourite products for protecting your kids when (or if) it’s sunny out.
Every year we rely on the Environmental Working Group’s annual Guide to Sunscreen to help us make safer choices and we’re happy that two of their top picks are now available in Canada. For all over we like thinkbaby (and thinksport), a zinc-based sunscreen that goes on smoothly with a slight, ghostly sheen that mostly disappears once you rub it in. It’s also free of endocrine disrupting chemicals, nano particles, PABA, parabens and Titanium Dioxide: www.naylanaturalcare.com
For spot checks we like sun sticks. They’re perfect for noses and other sticky-outy appendages and quick, easy and mess-free to apply. This year we’re using Badger’s SPF30 Natural Sunscreen Face Stick which is also highly rated by the EWG. Though zinc-based, the Badger stick goes on without a trace. And here’s a tip for mamas, it’s great to use on the backs of your hands to protect them from the sun (and aging): www.lavishandlime.com
Modern mamas are pretty well-versed in the basics of sunscreen, but it’s becoming well-known that it’s just as important to protect our little one’s eyes as it is to protect their skin. The Canadian Pediatric Society recommends kids wear sunglasses as well as sunscreen and hats. Ultraviolet exposure when you’re young causes cataracts and other retinal diseases, so it’s smart to get your kids into this healthy habit early. We like Adventure Baby Banz, the newest sunglasses from Australian company Baby Banz, who are known for their sun smarts. These protect against 100% of UVA and UVB rays and thanks to their handy neoprene strap and soft rubber nose piece they both stay on – as long as you position the strap correctly – and are more comfy. You can also get Banz with straps for kids from three to five and slightly hipper, strap-free Banz for bigger kids: www.kidcentral.ca
Now all we need is a predictable stretch of sunshine to get into the sun safety groove.

Thanks so much for featuring the thinksport and thinkbaby sunscreens yoyomama! They are quite popular due to their high ratings on the cosmetics database website. As a result, the manufacturer is having a hard time keeping up with the overwhelming demand which has unfortunately trickled down to retailers (me!). Both thinkbaby and thinksport sunscreens are currently sold out at Nayla Natural Care, but not to worry, I have an order on the way and it should arrive mid-June. (I am ordering as they make it available). If you would like to be informed when the shipment has arrived, just head on over to the site (http://www.naylanaturalcare.com/store/Scripts/prodList_outdoors.asp?idCategory=186) and click on the thinksport or thinkbaby sunscreen and you will see instructions in red.
Thanks for your understanding and patience!
Have a great day, and thanks again :)
