Cranberry and soda may be the go-to drink for expectant and nursing mamas but the novelty wears off pretty quickly and you begin to long for a bit of variety and something a titch more sophisticated. Which is the perfect time to open a bottle of UnWine.
A new offering from the folks behind TrueBlue – a Canadian company – PureBlue UnWine is a blend of juices from wild blueberries, black currants and unfermented merlot, sauvignon blanc and syrah grapes, the same grapes that make red wine beneficial for your health. It’s free of added sugars and preservatives but packed with polyphenols, naturally occurring antioxidants found in blackberries, red grapes and black currants.
We took a bottle to our w(h)ine club, gave it a swirl in our glasses, took a deep sniff and pronounced it “Refreshing, full on flavour with subtle dark berry flavours and sweet aromas with a full, long lasting finish. And nice and juicy.” Though much sweeter than your average bottle of red wine, it’s not nearly as sweet, or grape-y, as grape juice. And what’s not to love about the health benefits or the very adult looking bottle? Interestingly all this juicy goodness comes at the same price as a bottle containing grapes that actually have been fermented.
In addition to wine sized bottles of PureBlue, the juice also comes in 300 ml bottles, as do PureBlack, featuring blackberries and aconia berries, which we found incredibly refreshing; PureRed, which is pomegranate and cranberry based, and incredibly dry and yummy; and PureWhite, combining Coconut Water and Lulo fruit with sauvignon blanc grapes which coconut lovers will enjoy. And if you’re feeling nostalgic for your cranberry and soda they all taste equally yummy when combined with sparkling water.
You can find pure juices at Whole Foods or any Superstores/Loblaws with a natural living section so why not surprise your wine club (or book club) by showing up with a nice vintage of UnWine to shake things up a little?
