Summertime is Southwest Salad time at McDonald’s. In this summery picnic- inspired contest, yoyomama readers have the chance to win a fun folding children’s picnic table set, an adult picnic backpack and a $50 McDonald’s gift card so you can treat yourself to a whole lot of yummy salad (total value $200).

With the new Southwest Salad at McDonald’s, available for a limited time only, customers can enjoy a kick of flavour with a colourful corn and bean vegetable mix, red peppers, red onions, cheddar cheese and tri-colour tortilla strips. To top it off, you’ll have your choice of a warm and zesty chili-lime glazed chicken breast, crispy or grilled, and Renee’s Southwest Dressing.  In celebration of this great new salad, McDonald’s is offering a great summer picnicking prize so you can enjoy eating outdoors with your little ones in high style! The prize includes a fun, kid-sized folding picnic table, an adult backpack filled with all the  picnic essentials you could need such as plates, cups and cutlery and a $50.00 McDonald’s gift card so you can try the new salad on your next picnic adventure.

    Fresh-off-the-vine tomatoes are my favorite ingredient in a summer salad…especially tomatoes from our backyard. You can taste the sweetness and goodness in every bite.

    Well, throw Bacon into anything and I’ll love it! Bacon bits (the real stuff) and Almonds are what make my salads delish!

    I like a bit of crunch on my salad, so deep fried noodles or sunflower seeds or toasted pine nuts usually do the trick!

    AVACADO! I’m obsessed with it this summer. It makes every salad special with it’s creamy texture and delicate flavour. So glad to hear McD’s has a southwest salad. I’m sure avacado will be in there too!

    My favorite ingredient is actually two – they’re tied. Fresh-picked tomatoes, or beautifully ripe and red strawberries. No need for dressing with either of these – just add the tomatoes or strawberries (or both!) and enjoy!

    My favorite salad ingredient is goat cheese, mmm, yummy. Especially when paired with blueberries and sauteed chicken. Don’t even need salad dressing with this delicious salad!!

    I have so many favourites it’s hard to pick one! I love all fruit, especially strawberries or pears. And you can’t go wrong with cheese, especially goat cheese. And last but not least, nuts are a necessity, either pine nuts or pecans are my faves. Yum salads!

    We add different nuts, as well as soybeans (dried) or dried edamame. Many of these come in different flavours too, which add to the salad.

    A salad is not a salad without the crunch, protein nutrition of any seeds: we love pistachios and pine nuts especially.

    Strawberries are our fave summer salad addition! There are so many great picnic spots around town. One that we recently discovered – atop Burnaby Mountain, near the Horizons restaurant. If you can make the hike up the huge hill with all your picnic gear (by the kiddie park), it is well worth the effort! The view is AMAZING – all the way down to English Bay and beyond!

    ooooohhh has to be blueberries and raspberries! We have the most FABULOUS neighbours that lift my three daughters over the fence every afternoon to pick a bowl of each for dinner. SO wonderful, and so packed full of antioxidants!

    My ultimate favarite items for a salad are: feta cheese, tomotoes and cucumbers. A must have for any salad, my daughter favorite are cucumber and tomotes from the garden.

    A tasty cheese – I love a strong goat cheese best! It helps make a salad appetizing for people who don’t really like salads much (and helped me during my pregnancies when eating vegetables made me feel nauseas!) Toasted nuts are also an appetizing addition!

    I know I’m supposed to live by the 100 mile diet so I love summer all the more. I get fresher produce and bake goods at farm markets and get the comfort of helping local farmers to.

    oh it has to have ranch dressings

    ditto all of the above but in the summer my salads often include whatever fruit is freshest at the Farmer’s MArket, maybe some goat cheese, and some slivered almonds. MMMMMMmmmm lunch yet?

    Nothing kicks up regular, everyday vegetables like a quick char on the BBQ! Corn, onions, peppers- even lettuce can be lightly oiled and grilled. Really makes the salad taste more summer-y!

    My favorite part of the salad is the chicken. I am a dedicated carnivore and love the grilled chicken. I also love the tortilla chips. It adds a nice crunch!!

    I’ve tried the Southwest salad with the chicken grilled. All was good except for the sauce and the chips – a bit too salty for my taste. Would love to try the other salads though.
