We all need to get away sometimes, but when you’re limited by time or don’t have the necessary budget for an exotic jaunt why not stay and play a little closer to home? Harrison Hot Springs is just a 90-minute drive from Vancouver but far enough away in both distance and pace that you’ll feel you’ve had a proper break.

Stay: at the Harrison Beach Hotel and book a Lakeview Junior Suite. Not only do the suites have kitchenettes so you can bring your own brekkie and pack your own picnics but you’ll get a patio overlooking the lake that’s practically as large as your room. It’s the perfect place to unwind at night, enjoying the great view, while your kids settle down inside and you can do all your dining al fresco.

Play: After you’ve exhausted the hours of by yourself enjoyment provided by the beach – it’s a perfect spot for kite flying – and lake, try out the bumper boats they’re seriously fun and all about going in circles, spraying and getting sprayed. And mini golfers won’t want miss out on Tugboat Junction.

Eat: The menu’s basic but yummy – think grilled cheese sandwiches and soup – at Kim’s Café and we’d highly recommend a pie from Harrison Pizza to enjoy on your beachfront patio. You’ll find fudge and ice cream wherever you turn (yeah!) but we were especially taken with the selection at Chantilly Gelato.

Explore: Harrison’s right on the Agassiz-Harrison Mills Circle Farm Tour route and no cheese lover’s visit would be complete without a stop at Farmhouse Natural Cheeses where you can treat your tots to cheese curds and a chance to spy donkeys, goats and more. The Limbert Mountain Farm, known for their herbs, is also child-friendly as is their lavender lemonade. And the Kilby Historic Site is packed with friendly farm animals for your kids to pet and feed.

Alas, the only way you’ll experience the hot springs themselves is if you stay at the  Harrison Hot Springs Resort or swim in the public pool but your kids will be happy with the lake and the beach. And if you time your visit during the Harrison Festival of the Arts be sure to catch their children’s day on July 14th.

Went there last summer and stayed at Harrison Beach Hotel. The accommodations were great for a young family (<1yr, <3yr). The pool was very basic.

We stopped at Dino Town on our way out (awaiting afternoon check-in), and it was worth the visit.
