workin’ it

Pregnancy and work don’t necessarily go hand in hand. Sometimes you just want to lie in bed and wait for the baby to arrive, but if you’re going to keep your bouncing baby in bibs and burp cloths, you’ll need to bring home the bacon until your maternity leave begins. But when do you tell people? How do you tell people? And how do you stay connected when you’re at home with your baby?

A few springs ago we asked Willie Cromack of John Henry Bikes about getting kids starting riding with run bikes. But what comes next? How do we transition them to “big kid” bikes with daunting accessories like pedals and brakes? We thought it best to go back to Cromack for some more expert advice.

As the weather changes and the swallows come back from Capistrano, there is nothing better than going outside with your kids. Whether your little one is an energetic five-year-old or a member of the swing and stroller set, why not take them to the Reifel Bird Sanctuary?

magic mealtimes

Being faced with a cranky kid who has low blood sugar is enough to make any mama’s anxiety peak. We do our best to keep healthy snacks on us at all times, but even the best of us can foiled when it comes to mealtimes, so we keep a mental map of all the locations of the Magic Oven, where the food’s nutritious, the service is fast and they’ve thought of ways to keep your kids amused so you don’t have to.

With the glow of Mother’s Day just behind us we thought it was the perfect time to review Amy Wilson’s When Did I Get Like This? The Screamer, the Worrier, the Dinosaur-Chicken-Nugget Buyer and Other Mothers I Swore I’d Never Be. Any mum who ever had a birth plan that didn’t go according to plan – so pretty much every mum – will identify with Wilson’s memoir of all her parenting moments, from pregnancy forward, that didn’t go quite as she’d expected.

spring showers

The weather may be getting better but spring showers are still out in full force, which means making sure you’ve invested in good raingear so that everyone’s happy when you’re out and about. After all, kids love being outdoors no matter what the weather and you (and your sanity) love getting them outside moving and shaking and getting out some of that excess energy. So don’t let wet weather stand in the way.

So we looked back and picked out some of our enduring faves for pregnant mamas, all of which would make great gifts this Sunday. They’re all Canadian-made and they may be oldies but they definitely are goodies – classics as it were. And classics never go out of style. Be sure to pick your fave and send this along with a strong hint to those who should be fêting you this mother’s day!
