just for you
Filed Under Mamas Rock, Stuff | May 3, 2010
As much as we enjoy kitchen appliances and breakfast in bed we know that what all mamas secretly, or not so secretly, want is a little time for themselves. So we’ve selected small, medium and large gifts that will give you a little getaway from the everyday. Once you’ve decided on your favourites, be sure to send this along to your significant other with a few pointed hints about what most strikes your fancy.
Small: Sweet Petites – Sugar Scrub Singles, Ilus Elu
Turn your morning shower into a lovely, scented mini-spa with a sweet petite. Modeled on sugar scrubs – which we’d enjoy far more if they didn’t make showering so slippery and require so much clean up – these one-use lavender-scented squares crumble into a scrub once you get them wet in the shower and there’s far less mess and excellent exfoliating and moisturizing properties. Plus they’re made with organic oils and sugar. Not a fan of lavender? They’ll do bespoke orders for you – think cardamom or coffee – now that would give you a little extra morning pick me up!

Medium: Facial, Strands Vancouver
If you prefer your salons to be environmentally friendly and casual, then a facial at Strands Vancouver in Gastown is a great little mama time out. Erika, their aesthetician, tailors the products she uses to your skin – picking from carefully selected, often organic, European lines – and works with a light touch that includes a long, utterly tranquilizing massage, exfoliation, masks, eye treatments and more. You’ll leave with useful tips and tricks for taking care of your skin from day to day and you can stock up on products too if you like, but you won’t be faced with a killer hard sell.

Medium: City Foot Rescue Pedicure, Park Hyatt Toronto Stillwater Spa
A mama’s feet take a pounding what with all the stroller pushing, baby carrying and grocery toting we do, so this is a luxurious chance to have your tender tootsies treated right with a massage, hydration mask, polish and more. Plus you can go in for a pedicure, but stay for awhile. Our tester, who went with a friend, arrived an hour early to get in some extra relaxing and started off by using their sauna and whirlpool while post pedicure they lounged on beds in the change room and watched a little TV. It’s rare to find a spa that welcomes you early and let’s you hang out when you’re finished your treatment.

Large: Shoo Foo Bamboo Bath Robe
This robe from Canadian company Shoo Foo, who are better known for their towels, really is just for you in that it’s not designed to be alluring but rather to be super comfy and cosy. Made from a combo of organic cotton and bamboo, it feels soft and warm from the moment you pull it on and will always make you feel a little bit pampered, even when you’re rushing about trying to get everybody out the door in the mornings. One caveat – it tends to snag easily so treat it with care and don’t cut loose threads but pull them through instead.
