Let us know what you think or share your great finds with us so we can share them with other Vancouver mothers!

We love the Epic event. so many great ideas for the home. Would love to go again. The sodastream looks like a fantastic idea. I am tired of taking home bottles of carbonated water and would love to have a more ecologically sound way to get sparkling water.
My favorite environmental tip would be to challenge yourself to think about the environment when you throw a party or have guests over. My husband and I just threw my son’s first birthday party. We tried to keep our environmental foot print to a minimum. I made a reusable birthday banner out of felt, we used compost-able plates and cutlery, we recycled all the beverage containers and I made all the party favors our of felt and scrap fabrics. I even used a pair of my old jeans. I made crowns and little stuffed animals. Everything we did was a huge hit and we felt really good about it:) I look forward to the Epic each year. It is a great show!
My eco tip is to use straight white vinegar as a weed killer in the garden instead of using harsh pesticides. It really works.
My fav tip would be to use a kettle full of boiling water down the drain once a week to keep it clog free. Also, baking soda makes a good scrub for counter surfaces and stove tops.
:)
I have made my own shower and counter scrub from baking soda, essential oil and some dish soap; it works well, smells nice and works for a long time.
I would love to learn more about going green and living healthier at Epic 2010. To get rid of the those pesky aphids on my plants, I spray my flowers with a mixture of dish detergent and water. Works well!
We always return our canvas shopping bags to the car as soon as we have unpacked groceries so that they are ready for the next trip and we don’t forget them in the closet. Also, once in the grocery store, we think about how much packaging we need ~ for example, fruit and veggies can go straight into the cart without needing to be stored in a plastic bag first.
Wow, love the idea behind SodaStream! Stopped drinking pop a long time ago b/c of all the sugar and waste…but this is a fabulous idea! Looking forward to checking out Epic again this year, came across some very talented vendors and excellent products. One of the biggest ways we stay green – by using cloth diapers! We also re-use as many product bottles as we can buy buying a bigger size in bulk and putting it in the smaller size. We had our first ‘green’ birthday party last year – instead of party favours, I made a CD of my son’s favourite songs and put it, along with a small treat into a colourful organza bag.
Enjoyed reading everyone else’s comments too!
Instead of using fabric softeners, we use the blue dryer balls. Works well and without all the chemicals! Also, we add a few drops of essential oils onto a piece of cloth and throw that into the dryer as well. Makes everything smell really great!
My husband and I are really looking forward to this year’s EPIC show because we missed last year.
We recycle every piece of plastic that comes into our home. Even if we take a yogourt container out with us, I pack the empty in a bag and take it home to recycle. It would be a lot easier to just throw it in the garbage but now I can’t stand the idea of throwing it out when I can just as easily bring it home. It is all about changing our concept of easy.
The Granville Island Toy Company will be at Epic again this year with lots of new eco-friendly toys as well as organic clothing from our Kids clothing store – Main Street Baby!
My tip is to make your own baby wipes – it’s a win win win situation as it is better for bebe (no harsh chemicals!), environment and your wallet!
Here is my recipe:
1. Tri-fold and overlap paper towels (get the ones that are half size sheets) – if you use the recycled kind, they are very flushable and if only used to wipe #1, can be compostable as well.
2. Make a mixture of 2 tbsp grapeseed oil, 1 tbsp glycerin (available at your pharmacy) and 2 drops tea tree oil, 1 drop eucalyptus oil. If you make a double or triple batch of this mixture, store it in the fridge, it will keep for a long time.
3. Put about 1/2 cup of boiled water (must be sterile to deter mold or fungus growth) in a wipes container or ziploc bag or a spray bottle and then add 2 tbsp of the mixture. Mix throughly and add the folded paper towel (I usually make about 1/2 a roll at once and it keeps for about 3 days – watch for a stale smell and when in doubt, make fresh wipes – eventually you will know how much to make for a 3 day period) or use the spray to moisten paper towel/toilet paper or cloths to wipe up your bebe.
If the wipes are too dry, add a bit more water.
Good luck, hope this inspires others to make their own :)
Some of the things I do include: walking to the local recycling centre with all my beverage containers loaded in the bottom of my stroller with kiddie in stroller, and if out of school hours, big girl rides her bike. I use as many organic products as possible for my kids; I’m replacing plastic items with stainless steel products and glass containers in our kitchen as budget permits (and recycling or donating them); we purchase many of our clothes and toys from consignment and thrift stores….etc!!
Would love to check this out. Our tip would be use vinegar and water as a plastic toy cleaner and for the diaper pail. I keep a bottle of it and just spray things down every once in a while.
For an all purpose spray for wipe-ups I use distilled water with a mix of organic essential oils. Lavendar and Tea tree are great for being anti-bacterial and germ fighters. I also add lemon, peppermint, eucalyptus, geranium….I just have fun with different mixes depending on the scent I want! Great for wiping up toys, dinner table, etc!
And best of all no chemicals for the lil ones!
We don’t own a car. I really enjoy taking the bus with my four-year-old. She knows her bus stop, and where to get off to go to preschool or to Grandpa’s house. She once got a full rush hour bus to sing “If you’re happy and you know it!”
Composting is easy! So, my favourite tip is to set up a composter and go for it. Then grow great veggies using your compost. Growing our own food and then composting our scraps is a great way to help the environment.
