wake me up, before you go go

As the days get longer it’s getting harder and harder to convince our little ones that it’s time to go to bed when it’s still light out and not necessarily time to arise just because the sun’s up. So rather than continually asserting this tiring truth, we’ve come to rely on the GoodNite Lite.

Music soothes the savage beast. When that savage beast is a screaming baby, you sing the first thing that comes to your mind, even if it’s a horrible commercial jingle. And if you can remember the words to a classic (and more appropriate) nursery rhyme, the tune can get lost somewhere in the recesses of your mommy brain, so you sing whatever tune you can. We have tried singing every nursery rhyme to the tune of Yellow Rose of Texas as if it were an Emily Dickinson poem.

When we first brought our little one home, we stared at him for a very long time wondering…hmmm…what next? Will his eyeballs fall out if he looks at the TV? How on earth did he produce that much pooh? What on earth is going on with my boobs? We looked in books, on the internet, asked our girlfriends and even asked random strangers on the street for answers. There wasn’t really one place to get practical advice that didn’t freak us out. Until we found The Survival Guide for Rookie Moms.

Along with kids comes an enormous amount of stuff – clothes, toys, gear, accessories and more. And they outgrow it much faster than you can keep on track of it. So we asked organized mama and author of the blog Uncluttering the Cluttered, Leah Avery, for her tips on maintaining some control of all the stuff we don’t know where to put it, how to get rid of, or what to do with.

Our springtime weather is simply not reliable in terms of planning outdoor excursions, so we’ve found the perfect indoor excursion to keep in your back pocket for a rainy day when you need to get the kids out and about – but be warned, it involves blood, slime, flatulence, barf and guano. Gross right? Maybe, but your kids will gag themselves with a spoon over Animal Grossology at Metropolis at Metrotown.

Is anytime not cookie time? They’re soothing after a stressful day of tantrums (for our kids and ourselves), they help salve owies and they’re a quick, handy snack when you’re on the road. But while homemade cookies both taste better and are better for you than processed options, the batches we make at home never last more than a day, plus everyone has their own favorite recipe and we’re just not up to making them all. So it made us – and our family – happy when we discovered health(ier) cookies from New Moon Kitchen.

greener, cleaner bathrooms
Filed Under Going Green, Stuff | May 21, 2010
Bathrooms aren’t generally the most elegant rooms in the house, and sometimes they can be a bit toxic. Thank goodness we’ve found some great ways to give them a bit of green glamour that’ll make the time your family spends doing their ablutions more environmentally friendly.
