Hand sanitizers are pretty much de rigueur once you have kids. After all you can’t always get your hands on soap and water before they get their hands in their mouths – and nearly 80% of the germs that cause sickness are spread via our hands – so you need a backup plan. And our new favourite backup is alcohol and chemical-free Quash, which has just become available in Canada.
We prefer hand sanitizing sprays to gels, they’re easier to use and less messy and we do our best to avoid those that contain antibacterials which can contribute to the rise of superbugs (among other things) and alcohol, which is flammable, poisonous if ingested and very drying, but all that does rather narrow your options. Luckily Quash’s spray formula relies on natural ingredients like Manuka Honey, White Willow Bark, Zinc, Vitamin C and White Tea to kill 99.9% of germs, including MRSA, E Coli and Salmonella. And we appreciate that they’re totally transparent about their ingredient list.
You can quash nasties with both 15 ml and 50 ml bottles. The small bottle is just a mite bigger than a lip gloss and good for about 75 sprays. Admittedly if you’re thinking of the environment you wouldn’t want to use heaps of these small bottles, but we just refill ours from the 50 ml bottle, which is perfect for diaper bags and 250 doses of germ quashing. The small bottle is also easy for little hands to use, although you may not want to give them free reign with it, they’d probably get a bit carried away. Though they would have very clean hands…
And not only does it smell yummy, thanks to essential oils of lavender and lime, but it multi tasks by moisturizing your hands too. And since our hands are always dry thanks to frequent post-diaper, pre-cooking, post-nose wiping washings, we’ll take all the moisture we can get.
