owl over it

Any new mama who’s sung Hush Little Baby over and over and over again knows that music soothes a savage – or colicky, or upset, or overwhelmed – babe. But there’s only so much singing you can do, especially at 3 am. Which is just one of the reasons we think an Owl Musicbaby from mimishop on Etsy makes a lovely new baby gift.

We also love mimishop’s owls because a handmade baby gift – even if it’s not made by the giver – feels more like a keepsake than something mass produced. And much as we’d love to make all our gifts, we don’t always have the time or (certainly in our case) skills. Each owl comes with a mechanical music box sewn inside which plays the classic Brahms Lullaby when you pull the string and will never require batteries. And the fastener on top means it can be attached to your baby’s crib, car seat or stroller to be used in times of need.

The Owl musicbabies come in a variety of prints and colours, with few pastels in sight. Which make them easy gifts to give pre-baby if you’re not sure of the impending arrival’s gender. And it’s great that mamas love it, but what about babies? The brand new tester who put it through its paces for us was mesmerized by the music and, we like to think, the high contrast colours and prints.

The only thing we found a titch disconcerting was that the music box plays for a full two and a half minutes, which may be ideal in the dark of the night, but can be a little long if you just want a burst of song. So you need to adjust your string pulling accordingly.

mimishop’s goodies are made by a Vancouver-based mama and it’s worth checking out the rest of her oeuvre which includes pacifier clips, Kool-Aid dyed rattles, organic toys and musical mobiles.
