hairykids

You’ve probably heard of the icky things that lurk in some personal care products, chemicals like Sodium Laureth/Lauryl Sulphate, PVP/VA Copolymer and synthetic fragrances. Their side effects range from irritating your skin and damaging your hair follicles to being toxic and carcinogenic. Which is why we’ve become avid label readers in our search for safer options for our family and why we’ve stocked up on goodies (literally) from Canada’s own Hairykids.

Hairykids is a line of shampoos, conditioners, bubble baths and hair gels which contain no dyes, fragrances, parbens or sodium lauryl sulphate, instead they use all natural preservatives, essential oils in safe concentrations for kids and organic ingredients when possible. Sisters Trish and Sheila Graham are mums who live on Saltspring Island and when they realized what lurks in many shampoos they decided to create a safer alternative. Luckily they didn’t just focus on safe but also on effective.

They have four different lines: Lemonade, Seaside, Tropical and Unscented. We must admit we’re super sensitive to smell but we didn’t find any of their scents overwhelming, in fact we’re a little bit in love with the Lemonade line which is just lemony enough and works beautifully for oily to normal hair. The Seaside line for normal to dry hair is just right for our tots. Their Tropical line is fruity and citrusy rather than smelling like sunscreen from the ‘70s while their Unscented line is best for those who are sensitive to smells and is safer for infants.

To continue with the safety theme, their packaging is food grade plastic which doesn’t allow light to filter through and compromise the products, plus it’s recyclable. Hairykids products are also biodegradable, which we, and the water table, appreciate.

Alas, like many safer options you’ll pay a titch more for Hairykids but as our little ones absorb proportionally more environmental toxins that we do, we’re okay with that. However as their parents doesn’t it also behoove us to make better choices for ourselves? At least that’s our excuse for appropriating the entire Hairykids Lemonade line for ourselves…
