take a break…

…spring break that is. We promised we’d be back with our regular editorial this week. And we are. But our very first email is full of ideas for keeping kids busy. Why? Because Spring Break is next week in Vancouver and it may have snuck up on you, what with all the foofaraw of the last few weeks. So here are some fun ideas for keeping your kids busy if their schedule is open next week.
The classes at Christianne’s Lyceum near 10th & Alma are not the cheapest around, but they’re great. And from March 8th to 12th they’re offering a series of workshops celebrating the imagination through literature and art for kids from five to eight. Your kids can take one workshop – Create a Kingdom on Monday for example – or sign up for the whole week. You’ll marvel at the collages and clay creations they bring home.
Why not gather together some other mothers and book a day to go Dungeness crab fishing with your tots? Chef Robin takes you crabbing near UBC, then shows you how to prepare your catch and finishes your day off with a crab feast. Best for kids of four on up, each mama can bring up to two kids for free – depending on numbers the cost varies from $99 to $149/adult. Costly? Yes. But we still have fond memories of going crabbing near Tsawwassen when we were young and talk about showing your kids how to eat locally: www.swallowtailtours.com
Are you in Science World withdrawal? Speaking of withdrawal, the Russians have left and it should be business as usual very soon. In fact they’re planning a whole set of pirate-themed events for the tail end of Spring Break. Swashbuckling youngsters will love learning perfect pirating from Captain Cannonball and his sidekick, bosun Baldric Bluebottom. Kids will also get a chance to hone their sword fighting skills and Agent Story will be leading them on imaginary treasure hunts: www.scienceworld.ca
And if Spring Break doesn’t affect your schedule consider this a little heads up that there’ll be more kids out and about next week.
Looking for more ideas? We also like the sound of the Spring Break Mini Camps at Carousel Theatre and Spring Nature Discovery camps at the Surrey Nature Centre.
