let me taste your wares

We’re on a pastry kick of late. Flakey croissants. Rich tourtières. Sassy little tarts. But alas, these aren’t the healthiest of sustenance which is why we’re always on the lookout for equally delicious but slightly less buttery options. So thank goodness we came across Homestead Baking.
Local mum and ex-lawyer turned professional baker, Jennifer Yong recently launched Homestead Baking which specializes in baking for kids and families, especially those with food sensitivities. Using organic evaporated cane juice rather than refined sugar and high-quality ingredients that are sourced locally whenever possible, Yong bakes muffins, scones, cookies, loaves, special orders and more. She has – or can make – lots of gluten, dairy and sugar-free options and is famed for her dairy and gluten free birthday cakes which are a godsend if you’re fêting a tot with food sensitivities or allergies.
The best thing about her baking is that it tastes so good that neither you nor your kids (no matter how picky they are and we tested it on the best when it comes to picky eaters) will ever guess what’s not in it. The worst thing is it’s not super easy to find but it’s getting easier now that she delivers a fresh batch of gluten-free brownie bites and blueberry scones and gluten and sugar-free banana-fig date muffins to the Home-Grow in Grocer on Saturday mornings. Yong will also be sporadically purveying her wares at the Kits and Main Street Farmers markets this spring and summer.
Speaking of ease Yong will also deliver, which is why we think a basket of her healthy goodies would make the ultimate new mum gift. Her bite sized brownies and muffins in particular seem ideal for new mamas, as they can be eaten with one hand while the other hand’s busy with nursing or juggling all the things a new baby brings.

Jennifer’s stuff is amazing! At our cafe our best seller is her gluten-free banana-fig-date mini muffin. Every single kid loves these no matter how picky they are. Her to die for brownies are my personal fave though…yum
