play fair

We all try to make a difference, whether big or little. Think of the recent earthquake in Haiti. You may have donated money, bought a tee shirt or held a bake sale. But did you know you can make a difference globally with your everyday purchases? When you buy Fair Trade products you’re helping alleviate global poverty while supporting sustainable development and benefiting marginalized artisans and fostering worker’s rights, gender equity and more. And thanks to Green Planet Parties you can do all that while planning your next birthday party.
Green Planet Parties, known for their eco-friendly selection of must- have party supplies, has just expanded their definition of green to include a fun selection of Fair Trade party goodies. You can choose from worry dolls, skipping ropes, trashy zip purses, ball and cup toys, Mayan family playsets and more.
The worry dolls are designed to be assigned your child’s worries and then tucked under their pillow to whisk those worries away before morning. We found it enlightening to listen to our little one enumerate her qualms before bed and suspect these could be a good tool if you have an anxious tot. And at just over $5 a pop, they’re great for goody bags. The trashy zip purses – yes, that’s their real name, not our evaluation of their quality – are made from recycled trash and are the perfect size to hold your child’s precious coins. And the Mayan Family Playset, includes a mum, dad, siblings, baskets and more and would be great for taking on the road.
All their Fair Trade treasures would make great party favours (or even Easter gifts) for kids but for mums the most fascinating aspect is the info accompanying each toy. Their incredibly detailed tags share the back stories including where and how they’re made and by whom. Think non profit groups in Sri Lanka, co-ops in Ghana, Guatemalan women who use the income from their projects for medical and dental care, daycare, schools and more.
And just think, you can impart some of that info along to your kids to help expand their view of the world. Or you can just play (fair).
