baby feet and clothes calls

Filed Under Going Green, Pregnancy and Birthing, Tips & Tricks | March 25, 2010

Crib, change table, car seat, stroller, carrier, diapers, wipes, toys, bassinet, onesies, shoes, socks and hats.  Wow. You are ready for your little one and, regardless how many baby showers you have had, you seem to be haemorrhaging money faster than you can say ‘rubber baby buggy bumpers.’

It’s time for a little bit of gentle love.

New babies wear their clothes two or three times at most before they grow out of them, so buying gently used onesies, sleepers and sweaters is almost like buying them new- and for a fraction of the price and ecological impact. There are so many options for gently loved clothing for little ones in the Lower Mainland, we thought we would take you on a tour so you can finish off your wee one’s layette without destroying your bank account and being planet friendly at the same time!

Craigslist

Craigslist is filled to the brim with baby items!  It’s a great way to grab seasonal items at the beginning of the season when parents have realized the items no longer fit. Listings often come with location information, so chances are you can find something just up the street from where you live.

Swap Meets

Spring is swap meet season in the Lower Mainland, so take advantage of it! No matter where you live, you are guaranteed to find a great swap meet near you, and in the spring, they are all kid focussed!  Go with your list and don’t be afraid to barter if you find something you want.  Bring your reusable shopping bags with you.

Consignment Stores

Why not trade in some of your used pieces for something new?  We know you’ll always keep the onesie you brought him home in, or the sleeper from your best friend, but unless you have the world’s largest storage space, you can’t keep everything.  Check out some of the great local consignment stores like Boomers and Echoes, Wee Ones Reruns or Beansprouts to name a few. Items are always in great shape and reasonably priced.

And all this saving means you’ll be able to buy some special brand new treats for your little bundle.

Great article! I agree with trying to reuse/recycle clothing! Especially when our little ones barely wear the tiny infant clothes! Another great consignment store is Trendy Tots on Dewdney Trunk rd, in Maple Ridge. The owner is fabulous, the prices are great, and you can count on finding something great when you stop in to shop. I have shopped there for 8 years, and have always been so pleased with the service and selection. http://www.trendytots.ca/

I love all these consignment places for kids clothing . My favourite place is “Kiddo” on main st.!! What a wonderful store, and stock.
