speed skating, skiing or hockey?

Here’s the next in our series of short, sweet articles on keeping your kids active and engaged during the Olympics.
Our kids are watching a lot more TV than usual these days, but not more of the same old same old, instead they’re catching a lot of the Olympics because we just can’t wait till they’re in bed to tune in to what’s happening in our own backyard. To assuage our parenting guilt over the excess of TV time we’re using the Games as fodder for discussions over which sports we like, used to participate in or would like to try.
Our goal? To hit up Cheapskates once things calm down and stock up on reasonably priced skates or skis so we can hit the ice and the slopes with our kids for less.
We’re also planning to use the time in front of the tube to teach our kids about sorting laundry. It doesn’t only give them some household responsibility and teach them a practical skill we plan to take advantage of for years to come but it’s also a great way to learn about sorting items by colour, size, owner and type. We’ll just have to lower our standards a little when it comes to expecting things to be folded just so.

Thanks for the ideas Annemarie! Here’s another one – make Olympic ‘tickets’ at craft time. The kids can collect them as admission when you sit down to watch an event. They’ll get excited about trying to collect them all! (a commemorative set?!)
