take it outside

What’s on today’s menu for quick tips for keeping your kids active? Outdoor play. Not only does it get them moving but it also lets them behave in ways you might not condone indoors, think yelling, running, climbing, digging…

Luckily most kids aren’t put off by a little rain – even if their mamas are – so bundle them up in boots, rain gear and warm socks and get outside. Playgrounds aren’t always user friendly at this time of year what with wet bars and swing seats but you can still go on a hunt for the deepest puddle, imitate amphibians, chant a rousing rendition of “Rain Rain Go Away” or play classic games such as Tag, Hide and Seek and Hokey Pokey.

If it’s a dry day then pull out the sidewalk chalk and draw your favourite mascots, a Hopscotch court, your shadow or the Olympic rings. Or “paint” the sidewalk with a bucket of water and a big paintbrush. You can also break out the bubble blow and see who can blow an award winning bubble.

If your local park is getting stale why not pay a visit to VanDusen Botanical Garden? We checked and it’s business as usual there during the Games, plus everything’s come into bloom at the same time and there’s heaps of free parking. It’s a great place for kids to run wild and the maze and waterfall are always a big hit.

We find the days always go better when the kids have a good chance to get all their beans out.
