keep it clean

Sure, in Wednesday’s tip we suggested taking it outside but you can’t be outdoors all day long in February, even when it is the warmest one in 150 years, so why not recruit your kids to help with the house cleaning?

Start with letting them make a mess. Perhaps building a fort or an obstacle course with couch cushions, old blankets and boxes? Serve them their snack in the fort to spice up their day and then the real fun begins.

Involving kids in the family chores lets them know their role in the family is important and makes them feel grown up and responsible. But it’s important to pick tasks for your tots that they’re capable of. Preschoolers can help set the table, wipe things up or put things away. They’re less befuddled with direct instructions such as  “put the books back on the shelves” rather than “tidy up your room.”

Or equip them with everything they need to do a bit of faux sweeping, dusting, doll bathing and toy truck washing while you sneak in a little of the real thing. A little music makes it all go faster and we like to rotate among these clean up songs to get everyone motivated.

And anyone who thinks that housework isn’t an activity obviously hasn’t done any.

Is your house spotless? Then check out these previous yoyos for other ways to while away the time indoors:
