we’re going on a treasure hunt

So did you make it into The Mint during the Games? Yeah, us neither. Million dollar coin or not we just weren’t up for standing in line for hours with little ones. So in this, the last of our quick and easy tips for keeping your kids busy when life isn’t business as usual, we have ideas for indoor and outdoor treasure hunts so your kids will still get a chance to go for the gold…
To set up an indoor treasure hunt it helps if you’re inspired and spend half an hour in the evening once the kids are abed and stash clues and tiny toys, books or treats around the house. The next day equip them with a map or clues and a hunting they will go. You can adjust the clues for the age of your kids by using picture clues for smaller kids and more creative, wordy clues for older kids.
Use your backyard, a local park or the beach for an outdoor treasure hunt. Hide the treasure and then draw a map with X marking the spot. Again adjust the degree of difficulty to the ages of the kids involved and you can even start teaching them north, south, east and west if they’re ready for it.
If they already have their own little Olympic coin collection here’s how they can make it gleam. Gather together an old toothbrush, soap, water, a bowl and coins. Partially fill the bowl with water and place some coins on the bottom. Set your kids loose brushing their collection with soap to make them look shiny and new. You can also put a bit of vinegar and salt in the water and drop the coins in and watch the tarnish disappear, but be careful it doesn’t get in their eyes as it’ll sting like mad. When everything’s clean they can dry it off and admire their loot.
And we’ll be back with our regular programming next week!
