let the summer games begin

Stuck indoors but want to stay active? With these easy indoor games why not pretend you’re in London, it’s 2012 and you’re about to participate in the Summer Games?

Volleyball: Use balloons to get a rousing game of indoor volleyball going. If volleyball’s a bit beyond your ken then try a classic of game of keep-away.  Or if you prefer soccer or table tennis to volleyball you can use balloons to make indoor versions of these games less destructive.

Balance Beam: You’ll need a board and a bit of space to practice your gold medal moves on the beam. Balance the board (it should be about ¾ foot wide by 6 feet long) on two equally high piles of books or (non-slippery) magazines and let your kidlets practice their balancing skills by walking across it. Adjust the degree of difficulty to their age and skill level. Perhaps they can walk across it backwards? Or hop from end to end. This is definitely an event that requires spotting (aka parental supervision).

Discus: If you already have bean bags then you’re all set for this event, otherwise improvise by pouring dry beans into an old sock, knot the top and then fold it back on itself. Depending on space and skills, your kids could toss their beanbags into “goals” like laundry baskets or you could mark distances on the floor with masking tape and see who can throw the farthest.  Underhand of course.

And if you’re feeling crafty why not make some medals with your tots and finish the fun off with an inspiring awards ceremony?
