BC Heritage Week continues right through Saturday and that other big event that’s happening here? Well you’ve still got lots of time to soak up the sights and sounds. There aren’t as many family-friendly happenings as usual, but we’ve still found some fun and there are lots of ongoing events on our Olympic List and also in last weeks what to do.

Arctic Storyteller
Thursday February 18th, 10:30 am, Welsh Hall, West Vancouver Memorial Library, 1950 Marine Drive, West Vancouver

The Yukon’s Gramma Susie (Sharon Shorty) and Cash Creek Charlie (Duane Ghastant Aucoin) bring the stories and songs from their Tlingit heritage to create an animated, engaging storytime that’s feisty, opinionated and funny: www.westvanlibrary.ca

Chinese Lion Dance Tour of Marpole
Thursday, February 18th, 11 am, Marpole area on Granville Street, Vancouver

In celebration of the Chinese New Year of the Tiger, the Lion will be wending its winding way along Granville Street stopping to perform its blessing ritual at participating merchants. There’ll be dance, music, blessings and good luck for everyone in the Marpole community: www.marpoleonline.com

Pop Up Dances
Thursday, February 18th, 4 pm, various locations around Granville Island, Vancouver
Prepare to be amazed as some of Vancouver’s favourite dancers pop up in surprising places around the Island. Catch one performance or catch them all. You’ll see dancers in the Carousel Theatre Window at Noon, Origins Coffee window at 12:15, Halfmoon Yoga window at 12:30 pm, i.e. creative window at 12:45 pm and then they start it all again at the Carousel Theatre. Winterruption Kids Zone
Saturday, February 20th to Saturday, February 27th, various events and times.

Winterruption Kids Zone, next to the Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island, Vancouver
There’ll be face painting, mask and instrument making, Mortal Coil’s Rainforest Procession, the larger than life The False Creek Bride Sculpture, a local storyteller, dance, theatre, live music, Cultural Olympiad events and more. And hockey fans will want to check out the 9- foot-tall team of Canada’s most kooky players – “Duh Hockey Guys.” And it’s all free. Check their site for times and details of all the different events. We were very disappointed to visit Granville Island this past weekend and find the KidsZone was closed a full hour and half before their site said it would be. In addition the signage is confusing, so keep your eyes peeled if you head down: www.granvilleisland.com

Kinesphere
Saturday, February 20th, Sunday, February 21st, 2 pm, Place de la Francophone main stage on Granville Island, Vancouver

This music and dance creation features about 30 dancers and musicians from Arts Umbrella and the Sarah McLachlan Music Outreach program creating a unique piece that’ll be an interpretation of young performing artists’ diverse perspectives on their place in a diverse world: www.artsumbrella.com

Blim Monthly Community Market
Sunday February 21st, 11 am – 5 pm, Heritage Hall, 15th and Main, Vancouver

Catch 48 vendors from our local and creative community. They’ll be selling everything from food to fashion and accessories to fine art. In addition there’ll be music, hot food, beverages and entertainment. Blim aims to appeal to everyone from babies to hipsters to pets: blim.ca

Special Evening Storytime with Michael Kusugak
Wednesday February 24th, 7:00 pm, Storyhouse, West Vancouver Memorial Library, 1950 Marine Drive, West Vancouver

Michael Kusugak was raised in a traditional Inuit world of igloo building, seal hunting and dog sledding and he’ll be in town sharing Inuit stories and real life adventures from the pages of his books: www.westvanlibrary.ca

The Hockey Hall of Fame

It’s the Hockey Hall of Fame exhibit with NHL trophies, interactive games and a huge collection of hockey photos. Tiny hockey fans will love the themes of NHL hockey history that capture the essence of the games and it’s all free: www.metropolisatmetrotown.com

Kids Swap Meet

Winter-brrration at Lansdowne Centre

This Saturday they’ll be celebrating the Year of the Tiger with the Lion Dance, Chinese Opera, Hip Hop Dance, Folk Dance, Kung Fung, Chinese Brush Paintings and more. Heritage Week – Open House

The Cannery Celebrates Steveston Revealed
Saturday, February 20th, – Wednesday, February 24th, various times, Gulf of Georgia Cannery, Richmond

The Cannery will be hopping with live music, local artisans, family activities and Lumberjack shows from the 21st – 23rd at 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm.
