Sure you can buy boxes of Valentine’s cards featuring your child’s favourite licensed characters but setting your kids up to make their own love notes is both more creative and a great way to while away a few gray afternoons. We’ve stocked up on everything we need to make our own lovely cards at RubyDog’s Art House.

If you haven’t visited this emporium of all things crafty yet, then Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse. Located on the same artsy little block near Fraser and Kingsway that houses Les Faux Bourgeois and Collage Collage, RubyDog’s is all about collage, altered art, mixed media and visual journaling. Owner Leanne Bishop has collected an amazing selection of everything from postcards, bottle caps, magnets and stamps to crayons and glitter and just about everything in between. Kids love prowling about looking for treasures.

For Valentine’s Day crafts and cards they have a dedicated table stocked with card making kits, romantic packaging, card stock, stickers, lace, glitter and more. And the best thing is that Bishop is a true fount of ideas, especially for non-crafty folk like ourselves. On our first visit there we were rather overwhelmed by the selection and drew a bit of blank, but she sent us away full of lofty plans that were actually within our range of (limited) talents. Actually that’s the second best thing, the best thing is that everything’s priced extremely reasonably, so making your own cards won’t cost you much more than buying them at the drug store.

RubyDog’s is also a great place to pick up little gifts like colouring books and magazines but as their stock is always changing we’re not guaranteeing anything. And the store’s named for the friendly store pooch, so if your tots are a little fearful of canines it’s probably wise to forewarn them.

And if you’re feeling just a little crafty don’t forget these fun Valentine’s cards we teamed up with Cici Art Factory to bring you last year. All they require is a printer and some scissors.
