like beans in a pod

Mothers are some of the most inventive and creative people we know. One chilly day after local mama Carleigh Kage noticed that while most of the kids in the playground were wearing hats their ears were still exposed, she went home and developed the Bean Pod a head and ear protector that can be worn alone or under a hat.

She was then inspired to go on and design the Gram Jam, a sleeper/lounger/long underwear combo for babes and the Shortie which performs all the same services as above, but for warmer weather.

All the Bean Pod line is made from organic, unbleached cotton and bamboo blend fabric with outside-sewn seams and no inner tags to irritate sensitive skin. With its amazing softness and naturally antibacterial and moisture-wicking properties, bamboo is a great fabric for baby clothes and each piece in the line multi-tasks.

Slip the Bean Pod on under a wool hat and itchiness is no longer an issue; pop it on a newborn’s head to keep them warm after bath or in the stroller; or wear it under a rubberized rain hat to cut down on the clammy factor.

The Shortie, for kids from zero to two, resembles nothing so much as a turn of the century gentlemen’s bathing suit and can be layered under an outfit on a colder day or worn as an undershirt, romper or jammies. It’s roomy and cozy with handy snaps at the crotch to make diaper changes easy. We haven’t tested the Gram Jam but it looks as thoughtfully designed as the other pieces in this line.

We have found the sizing to be generous. The 3T Bean Pod fits a (small) adult head for example, so we’d suggest touching base with Kage to get her feedback on fit before you order. And alas, the price of made-in-Vancouver organic baby clothes isn’t cheap, which is why we think these would make great shower gifts for brand new beans.
