real welcomes

Sure e-cards suffice when you don’t remember a friend’s birthday till the last minute or you’re throwing a party, but when a baby’s born it’s nice to mark it with something a little more permanent. We’ve discovered a lovely collection of letterpress cards from a group of eco-friendly focused Canadian companies that are perfect for either announcing your new babe or celebrating someone else’s. And as each have their own distinctive style, one of them is bound to catch your eye.

How are they eco-friendly you ask? Each of these companies print their offering on paper that’s either 100% post-consumer recycled or Forest Stewardship Certified (FSC) and they also all use vegetable or soy-based inks.

Mama Lisa Zuraw was inspired to create Sweetbeets’ line of delightful cards that spark memories of the magic of childhood when she found herself decidedly underwhelmed by the selection of unimaginative baby announcements she was faced with after the birth of her first child. Part of a collection that includes birthday cards and party invites available from her Etsy shop and at retailers across Canada, she only has a small selection of baby cards, but in her case small is beautiful: www.sweetbeets.com

If you’re attracted to a non-cutesy mix of modern and vintage then you’ll want to check out baby cards from That Sky Blue, Canada’s largest letterpress design and print studio based in Montreal. You can choose from their collection of baby cards or they’ll also create custom baby announcements for you. They have baby shower cards too and though they don’t retail online they’re widely available across Canada: www.thatskyblue.com

Jonesy.ca offers the largest selection of baby cards of any of these companies we’ve mentioned with everything from stylized pink and blue safety pins to a purple pacifier and a cow + moon card. They sell online and you can either order them individually or in boxed sets.  We also love their kids emergency set which covers all your eventualities from new babies to birthdays: www.jonesy.ca

What lovely missives with which to launch a baby into the world in a greener way. But finding the perfect words, well that’s all on you…
