artful birthdays

We all know there’s a big event coming up in Vancouver, but that doesn’t mean that other big events, like birthday parties, should be put on hold. We’ve had a lot of fun at artful birthdays for both boys and girls and have compiled some great suggestions for “cultural” venues about town where you can throw the perfect arty party with very little effort on your part.

A recent newcomer, the East Side’s Collage Collage throws a mean art party for kids as young as two. You bring the goodies and they take care of the activities and the mess. Owner, artist and instructor Erin Boniferro consults with you to plan an activity appropriate to your child’s age and interests. And if you want it all documented for posterity by someone who’s not running around setting out cupcakes (ie. you), local photog Lauren Teterault will come in and shoot your party for an extra $75: www.collagecollage.ca

At 4Cats Art Studio you get to choose from a variety of themed parties including Paint Throwing, Clay Party, Star Force or Fairy Party. They take care of all the instruction, set up and clean up, heck they’ll even throw in invites. With parties for kids from three on up, the art the kiddies create is their takeaway, which means you don’t need to sort out goody bags. And with studios all around town, you’re bound to find one close to home: www.4catsart.com

If you’re partying chez you and you need ideas to keep your tiny guests occupied, local company Craft Caravan can create crafts to match your party theme – they send you everything you need for each craft, all you have to have on hand is glue. Choose from pirate treasure chests, princess tiaras, firefighter finger puppets or rainbow fairy wrist bands – and if none of them fit the bill just email Keri, the mum behind the crafts, and she’ll come up with a crafty solution for you. Just a note, the birthday crafts aren’t up on their site right now, but they’ll reappear soon and in the meantime just contact them directly for more info: www.craftcaravan.com

Oh and it’s best to wear clothes that can get painty and gluey and glittery for all these affairs. Which makes choosing a party outfit so much easier.
