With the opening of the 2010 Winter Olympics just weeks away we thought it was about time to suggest a few tunes to help get us – and our kids – in the mood. Along with some rather obvious favourites, there are a few here you may not have considered. But trust us, there’s nothing like the resounding trumpet fanfares of Aaron Copeland and Bill Conti to inspire the athlete in you, or the motivating lyrics of Avril, ELO or Bowie to make you feel like a champion. So grab your red mitts, put your hands up, and tell us Can You Feel It?

It’s another busy weekend full of a great assortment of family fun!
You’ll find mixers and broccoli and torches and momoirs and sing-alongs. Pretty much something for everyone.
artful birthdays

We all know there’s a big event coming up in Vancouver, but that doesn’t mean that other big events, like birthday parties, should be put on hold. We’ve had a lot of fun at artful birthdays for both boys and girls and have compiled some great suggestions for “cultural” venues about town where you can throw the perfect arty party with very little effort on your part.

Just like their clothes, little ones outgrow their toys awfully quickly. What was developmentally appropriate last week doesn’t cut the mustard this week. So in addition to seeking out new toys to engage them with, you’ve also got a backlog of toys they no longer use. When Michelle Shackleford and Beth Huel became mums they wanted a solution to this ongoing cycle of clutter, one that was kid, parent and environmentally-friendly and so they launched Lucky Duck Toy Box Delivery.

In the Safety Guide to Children’s Personal Care Products from the EWG they recommend that we use fewer personal care products and use them less frequently on our kids; that we don’t trust the claims companies make and to check their ingredient lists; and that we buy fragrance-free products. Local skin care company Taslie makes synthetic fragrance-free products, with easy-to-access and understand ingredient lists and we’re happy to cut back on the number of baths we give our kids, if nothing else it streamlines their bedtime routine.

We must admit that this wet weather has stretched our resources when it comes to thinking of ways to while away indoor time with our tots. Here are a few fun things we’ve come up with that we thought we’d share in case you’re experiencing a similar bout of cabin fever.

This isn’t really a weekend guide, it’s more of a weeklong guide full of family fun! You’ll also notice a distinctly Olympic feel to much of what’s happening and this is just the beginning…
write on

Do you make your kids write thank you notes? We always have the best of intentions but don’t necessarily follow through. With the proliferation of emailing, texting and the like, the opportunities for us (and our kids) to write by hand are constantly being narrowed down and the delicate art of letter writing – and even good handwriting – is being lost. But local mama Tracy Sullivan is looking to change all that with Design Schooled Kids, her newly launched line of kids note cards.

The New Year is a natural time to think about a “new you”, so we asked local personal stylist Jessie Carlson for her advice on dressing for your mummy body without bowing to the whims of fashion or resorting to “mom” jeans. Carlson’s a big believer in classics that don’t go out of style and dressing to flatter the body you have now rather than the one you’ll have when you lose ten pounds or stop breastfeeding or…

What encourages lifelong learning, strengthens your family relationship and is lots of fun? Reading to your children. In honour of Family Literacy Day which is coming up on January 27th, we wanted to share some ideas for fun activities to help develop your tot’s literacy skills, find out about family literacy events across Canada and three books that will provide you with myriad inspiration for what to read with your kids.
