magical memories revamped

If you grew up in Vancouver, heading down to Woodward’s over the holidays was an annual tradition. Not just for their amazing holiday window displays, which are now part of Christmas at Canada Place (except this year when they’re on hiatus), but for their iconic food floor. Our own childhood memories of the food floor include lots of “fancy” treats, a delicious smell and that ubiquitous jingle – “Dollar forty-nine day, Tuesday!” As part of the redevelopment of the original 1903 to 1908 portion of Woodward’s, this Tuesday Nesters Market opened a revamped version of the classic food floor.

Feeling nostalgic we went down to check it out. Would it be as magical as we remembered? Alas, few things are as magical when we’re grown up as they were when we were small, but it’s not meant to be a recreation, rather a re-envisioning and we still found “fancy treats” (think Tunnock’s Tea Cakes and a full range of Green & Black’s Chocolate) and delicious smells. The store was also packed with organic and imported fresh foods; a seafood counter; a deli-bistro and a bakery and heaps of people who were either as nostalgic as we were or who wanted to take advantage of the great “$1.49 Day” deals Nesters is offering for the next few weeks as part of their grand opening celebrations.

The extremely helpful staff even offering to order in items we desired. So if you find Curly Wurly Candy Bars there when you visit, well that’d be on us. In honour of their new location they’ve even recreated Woodward’s classic peanut butter.

Located on the corner of Abbott and Cordova, it’s also handily right next to an equally new London Drugs. Plus you can pop round the corner to the  the Army & Navy for holiday deals while you’re there. Talk about taking you back in time and back to a neighbourhood you may not have frequented for awhile.

I took my preschooler to $1.49 Day, just like my mum used to take me. Very nostalgic.

So fun. I wanted to go with my mum but she couldn’t make it. I’m so glad you found it nostalgic as well. It would have been cool if they could have used the Woodward’s Holiday Windows for the launch.
