One of our favourite parts of Christmas is stuffing our kid’s stockings with care, right down to the orange at the bottom. We like to combine a mixture of surprises that are both useful and fun and if you’re on the hunt for a stocking itself, there’s still time to order one of the handmade, personalized offerings from Dress Me Up. They’re made from 100% vintage wool suiting and blanketing and lined with organic cotton. And now on to stuffing:

Dress Up Dolls Wall Stickers: Talk about multi-tasking. These stickers are both décor and a toy, plus they’re made of fabric rather than vinyl, so they’re non-toxic and lovely to boot. Choose from dress up dolls with both winter and summer wardrobes (our faves, they’ll keep your kids entertained for hours) as well as birds, forest critters, dinosaurs and heaps more. They’re scrunchable, reusable and washable. And they take up lots of valuable stocking space! Find them at www.saplings.ca.

Little Clementine Natural Art Products: All Little Clementine’s luscious art products are free of chemical dyes and additives. Their modeling dough is coloured with tumeric, carmine and spinach; their soy crayons are paraffin-free and the perfect shape for little hands; while their glue stays strong but also washes off any surface with water. Perfect for setting your little one up for an artistic new year. Recommended for kids of three and up and available at Whole Foods.

Twinklebelle Felt Hair Clips: Local company Twinklebelle, known for their no-slip Moon Clips, has added Felt Clips in patterns that range from dolls to cherry blossoms to owls. The non-slip coating means they really do stay put in baby-fine hair (we put them to the test) but they’re sturdy enough to stand up to toddler antics as well. Twinklebelle makes great kids’ cooking sets if that’s something you’re looking for. Best for infants on up, find them at Pedagogy Toys.

Eric Carle Touch-and-Feel Stroller Cards: We feel it’s never too early to introduce your babe to the wonderful world of Eric Carle and these tactile stroller cards featuring a very hungry caterpillar with a fuzzy body, a woolly sheep and more will get them off to the right start. They’re bound to become well-chewed, well-thumbed and well-loved and they’ll attach to everything from your stroller to your backpack to your diaper bag. Recommended for toddlers but we think they’re great for babies as well, find them at Raincoast Books.

Tuscan Farm Gardens’ Lavender and Calendula Body Lotion for Sensitive Skin: Dubbed “bunny cream” by our tiny tester because of the bunny bedecked label (the story of the farm’s Benjamin Bunny also adorns each bottle) our whole family uses this soothing lotion. We love that we can recognize all the ingredients on the label and that the farm is local. Be sure to explore the rest of their children’s line as well. And if you’re a Rooibus tea fan, we’re drinking their lavender version by the bucketful. Find it at www.tuscanfarmgardens.com.
