back to basics: seasonal safety
As the winter weather sets in and the snow’s poised to fall we thought it would be a good time for a little winter safety refresher before you fill your home with trees, tinsel and toys or head out for an afternoon on the slopes.
Inside the house it’s important to be aware of the potential poison hazards of seasonal accessories. Despite reports to the contrary, while sap from poinsettias can cause mouth, skin or eye irritation the leaves themselves aren’t as poisonous, though munching on them still isn’t recommended. And road salt (stock up now, before the snow falls) is dangerous in large doses so store it safely out of your child’s reach.
If you use a real tree be sure to choose one that is fresh, secure it in a sturdy stand and water it daily. Place it in a low-traffic area away from heating vents, radiators, stoves, fireplaces and burning candles and always turn off all your holiday lights before you go to bed or head out for some winter festivities.
The fire inside may be delightful but it’s important to discuss fireplace and stove safety with your kids and remind them never to touch the glass panel of a fireplace or stove. And if your tots are too tiny to heed your warning it’s wise to install a safety gate to keep them away from the hot surface.
As for the great outdoors always use a ski or hockey helmet (not a bike helmet) when sledding and skating. And keep kids comfy by dressing them in easy on and off layers, making sure their hats covers their ears, choosing mittens over gloves and neck warmers over scarves. And now’s the time in invest in waterproof boots – not wellies – if you haven’t already.
Now you’re all set to safely enjoy the joys of winter and the holidays. Happy tree trimming, snow angel making and hot chocolate sipping.
