artful advents

As a little something special for our readers this holiday season we’ve teamed up with Liz Clay from Cici Art Factory to bring you an original advent calendar. You’ll need to get a little crafty to put this artful calendar together and because it’s designed as 24 separate pieces, rather than the more traditional card with windows, you can get a little crafty as to how you display it as well. You could hang each day’s activity – everything from “list four things you’re thankful for” to “tickle 10 toes 10 times” – from the mantle, on the tree or hide them around the house so you can start each morning with a mini scavenger hunt.

Here’s how to get started:

  1. Download it here.
  2. Print each of the two 8.5 x 11″ pages on a colour printer.
  3. Cut out each day into a vertical strip including the number, pattern and white tag. Each strip contains two days, so then cut the strip in half horizontally. Just follow the little scissors.
  4. Fold each strip along the line and fold each activity under so it’s hidden by the pattern above.
  5. String them up onto a branch or mantle or tape them to the wall or a piece of paper.
  6. Open one each day from December 1st to December 24th.
  7. Enjoy!

And if you’re not feeling crafty but you are feeling adventful you can never go wrong with Playmobil’s advent calendars. Or those from Rogers Chocolates.

Alternately you could make our advent calendar for your kids and keep the Rogers Chocolate calendar for yourself.

Playmobil’s advent calendars are available at The Granville Island Toy Company. We still have all four designs left, but don’t wait too long. We’ll be out of stock very soon!

I just printed them up. I will mix in a few activities, but otherwise these are perfect! Thanks for sharing this idea and the tools to make it happen.
