nothing but blue sky

Despite knowing that e-cards are greener than traditional stationery we just can’t kick our card habit and when it comes to letterpress we’re even more addicted. There’s something about the crisp feel of card stock between our fingers and the relief printing that never ceases to appeal. Plus there’s nothing like finding missives in the mailbox that aren’t bills or credit card offers. So image how our guilt was assuaged when we discovered That Sky Blue, a Canadian company which marries the traditions of letterpress with a modern green sensibility.
That Sky Blue was founded in Montreal in 2004 by Litsa Babalis and Ana Duque, friends with a passion for both design and the environment. They create everything from greeting cards to coasters to gift wrap and it’s all produced with 100% soy-based inks and recycled and recyclable packaging materials. The letterpress collection uses 100% cotton paper recycled from the garment industry and they print their other paper products on Forest Stewardship Certified (FSC) paper. And that’s all nice and green, their cards have a certain stylish je ne sais quoi as well.
We appreciate that their holiday cards are neither cutesy nor precious; instead they’re a simple mix of modern and vintage. And you can send them to everyone on your list – no matter how secular they are. Or aren’t. One of their sets of holiday gift tags, for example, come embossed with milk and cookies, signed by Santa himself. While their candy cane card is simply yummy.
Their site’s currently being updated but it’ll give you a feeling for their style and their goodies are available at many local retailers so it’ll be easy for you to track them down.
So if you’re going for real cards over virtual this holiday season, you can be greener by going blue.
