Strollers, Swine Flu and super smart babies. There have been a lot of family-related “issues” in the news of late. Here are the updates on the latest headlines:

The Maclaren Stroller recall has just been extended to Canada. The issue that prompted the recall is the risk of fingertip amputation and laceration posed by the hinge mechanism on the stroller when it’s not properly opened or closed.  The models affected by the recall include the Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, TechnoXLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno, and Easy Traveller and were sold between 2004 and November 2009. But Maclaren devotees need not worry about the hassle and fuss of returning their strollers, instead they can order a free hinge cover to protect tiny fingers by calling the Maclaren USA recall line at: 1.877.688.2326. Please note: at press time their online form wasn’t open to Canadians.

Last week the Public Health Agency of Canada updated its recommendations for H1N1 vaccines for children under five. In a nutshell, children between six months and three-years-old should receive two half-doses of the adjuvanted vaccine at least 21 days apart and children between three and nine with chronic health conditions should also receive two half-doses. What’s changed however is that healthy children between three and nine only need a single half-dose of the vaccine. Though this recommendation may change. Again.

Although the Canadian Pediatric Society doesn’t yet recommend limiting TV for tots under two apparently that’s set to change any day now. And without admitting that their DVDs don’t increase infant intellect – a claim which has always seemed a bit suspect -  Baby Einstein is now offering refunds to Canadians if they’re not completely satisfied with their DVD within 60 days of purchase. Check out the Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood for the back story on how this all came about.

And that’s a wrap.
