It’s the first of our 2009 holiday gift guides that’ll be running all this week and we’re starting off with fab toys for tots. We’ve resolved to shop mindfully this year and focus on gifts that are eco-friendly, local if possible and always fun.

You know you’ve reached a certain age or stage in your life when the thought of great kitchen gadgets is almost as exciting as the thought of a new pair of shoes. Apparently we’re well entrenched in that stage. So here are a few, handy, eco-friendly household items we’ve discovered of late.

what to do, what to do?

The weekends are definitely getting into the swing of the season. Santa’s popping up everywhere, as are Pulse to the Podium events. And we’ve added even more craft fairs to our listing.

One of the first parenting choices you’ll agonize over is cloth or disposable diapers. And while you may not spend as much time worrying about wipes, you will notice that conventional wipes add up in terms of waste. Even if you’re using reusable wipes – anything from washcloths and warm water to fancier homemade options – they’re not super handy when you’re out and about, which is why we like Nursery Naturals baby wipes as a portable alternative.

Some things come masquerading as kid products even though they’re really designed for mums. Like Tickle Tap Apps. These iPhone games for kids were created in consultation with preschool education researchers, designed to be fun while helping kids from three to five learn about sounds, numbers, colours, patterns and shapes. But as far as we’re concerned their main appeal is the distraction they offer in those moments when you discover that you forgot crayons to keep your kids occupied during the seemingly interminable wait for food at the restaurant, your child starts wigging out in the grocery store line or you hit a traffic jam. After all it’s easy to forget crayons but you’ve almost always got your phone on you.

Despite knowing that e-cards are greener than traditional stationery we just can’t kick our card habit and when it comes to letterpress we’re even more addicted. There’s something about the crisp feel of card stock between our fingers and the relief printing that never ceases to appeal. So image how our guilt was assuaged when we discovered That Sky Blue, a Canadian company which marries the traditions of letterpress with a modern green sensibility.

artful advents

As a little something special for our readers this holiday season we’ve teamed up with Liz Clay from Cici Art Factory to bring you an original advent calendar. You’ll need to get a little crafty to put this artful calendar together and because it’s designed as 24 separate pieces, rather than the more traditional card with windows, you get a little crafty as to how you display it as well.
