If you want brilliant children, read them nursery rhymes. If you want them even more brilliant, read them more nursery rhymes.
~ Albert Einstein (1879-1955)
No matter what the season, nursery rhymes never go out of style, and here are few of our favourite books for introducing these classics to our tots (and the first three are Canadian):
Sing a Song of Mother Goose by Barbara Reid
Through her trademark Plasticine artwork and subtle humour, Barbara Reid reinterprets many familiar rhymes such as Baa Baa Black Sheep with a wise granny sheep knitting a scarf from the three bags of wool and Hey Diddle Diddle with a tutu-sporting cow jumping over the moon while being serenaded by a cat in a tux.
Child’s Treasury of Nursery Rhymes by Kady MacDonald Denton
This award-winning title has something for everyone, ranging from lullabies for babies to schoolyard chants and rhymes for the older set. There are a smattering of famous English poems as well as delightful rhymes from as far afield as China, Africa and India.
Out Came the Sun: A Day in Nursery Rhymes by Heather Collins
Collins has fashioned a charming tale of “a day in the life” of a large and loving stuffed animal family. Toddlers and preschoolers will delight in following the adventures of these cozy creatures as they start their day with a wake-up call from Cock Robin and end it with a gentle bedtime reminder from the Man in the Moon.
My very first Mother Goose by Iona Opie and illustrated by Rosemary Wells
The author and her husband devoted their lives to sourcing and recording all manners of nursery rhymes, schoolyard chants and playground games, so inside you’ll discover a lovely blend of familiar and obscure rhymes. The illustrations are large, humourous and bright, with child-friendly animals sporting old-fashioned clothes as they frolic across the pages.
