safer heating and eating
Filed Under Going Green, Stuff | October 6, 2009
We love all the stainless steel storage options on the market, but there’s one big drawback to them, they’re not great for reheating food fast. Which is why we wanted to share some newer, more versatile options we’ve recently added to our oeuvre.
Little Bites Jars, Cups and Bowls from Kinderville can go from the freezer to the microwave to the dishwasher. They’re made from silicone which is not only naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to bacteria but also BPA, lead, PVC and phthalate-free.
Coming in fun Dr. Seuss-esque colours, it’s very handy to use the jars to store homemade baby food in the freezer, then reheat it in the self-same jar, feed your babe from it and then bung it into the dishwasher before your start the cycle anew. They do recommend using the jars for on the go, but we found the lids didn’t maintain their seal while we were out and about, so we’d recommend just using them at home.
When we first held the Little Bites cups we thought they might be too squishy and result in spills in little hands. But of course little hands aren’t quite as strong as ours so they actually were a great drinking option. The bowls are equally handy as silicone doesn’t slide around on tables and high chair trays as much as plastic and metal does. And because silicone’s so durable we’d guess these would probably last from infancy right on up to when your child hits school age.
And here’s one for parents. We think the MC2 container from local company Innate is perfect for taking leftovers to work for lunch. The bottom of the container is stainless steel, while the very cool silicone lid expands into a microwavable container. The lid seals tight and is leak-proof but it’s best for reheating “solid” food – pastas and casseroles – rather than anything more soupy. The container’s big enough to hold and adult-sized portion but would also be handy for daycare and school use.
