to doula or not to doula?

Intrigued by the thought of doula care? As you approach your due date the idea of having a little extra support becomes decidedly more attractive. Here’s an overview to help you start exploring the ins and outs of doula care:

What is a Doula?
A doula provides skilled physical, emotional and informational support through pregnancy, birth and new parenthood. You may choose from either a birth doula or a postpartum doula who can support you through the first weeks (or even months) of parenthood. This role may be filled by a professional doula or sometimes a loving friend or family member. Here’s the big picture on professional doula care.

What about My Partner?
While partners play a key support role through birth and postpartum, trust us, they’ll benefit from support as well. A doula can help them feel confidence as they support you and give you peace of mind, knowing your partner’s being cared for too.

How Much Does a Doula Cost?
Doula care in BC ranges from free to $1,000 or more depending on levels of experience and training and services offered. While family budget is a priority, also consider what elements are important to you in finding the right match for your needs. Are you open to a newer doula, or do you want someone with years of experience by your side? Most doulas are happy to refer other of their colleagues in different price ranges.

How Can I Learn More?
Doulas understand that the choice to have a birth or postpartum professional join your support team is a very personal decision so they generally offer a free, no obligation in-home prenatal consultation to share more about their background and training and explore together how they can best support your unique needs. You may end up meeting with several doulas before you find the right match and asking friends for recommendations can be a great way to get started.
