diaper dilemma

Filed Under Favourites, Pregnancy and Birthing, Tips & Tricks | October 8, 2009

Any new parent who has even ventured into the cloth versus disposable diapers debate will readily share the overwhelming feeling that comes from reading the research, learning about available products and considering the logistics.

Just a few decades ago, cloth diapers were the norm and in many ways it was all so much simpler.  No bamboo, fleece, organic cotton covers, no special liner systems, no hybrid flushable/washable diapers, no eco-biodegradable diapers, no conflicting research.  Just pins, cloth and a laundry line.

While our new reality presents an overwhelming array of options (and many strong opinions), we are also lucky to have access to so many quality products.   Here are a few simple tips to help you make informed decisions:

  1. What is most important to you? Environment? Cost?  Functionality within your lifestyle and living space?  Each factor has its place, but prioritizing these elements can help you in the discernment process.  If you’re interested in the cloth option, consider an introductory workshop with Hip Baby, New and Green Baby or Mama Maven.
  2. Remember, nothing is permanent.  Try out an option and see how it feels. Take the time to figure out what’s right for you and remember this may change as your child grows older.  A great way to try out the cloth option is through a diaper service or tester program -  minimal commitment, cost effective, and easy logistics.
  3. Go easy on yourself!  You may have strong ideas about what you want prenatally, and then find that a different option works best once your baby is born.  Remember that many parents use a variety of products to meet their diverse needs – home, travel, shopping, daycare…

Like so many of the decisions we make as parents, the diaper choice can invoke a range of emotions, from confusion to guilt.  The best advice we can give you is to talk with other parents, do your research, try out a few options, and ultimately discern what works best for you as parents, and for the needs of your baby.  And be warned, you may change your mind a few times along the road!

thanks to yoyobelly for highlighting this great movement toward more sustainable choices in diapering and putting Hip Baby in such fine company with New and Green Baby and Mama Maven; two wonderful resources that have inspired us.

and to all the interested but daunted parents to be, with the right diapers, diapering area set-up, accessories, etc. you can make your transition to cloth diapering a smooth one, and in the process be kinder to our planet and your child too.

    hip baby.
