When you’re expecting, choosing a car seat is right up there with choosing the right stroller. There’s lots of research to do and options to consider. But whether you choose a car seat by brand, recommendation or even colour, there’s no doubt that we all want our children to be as protected as possible on even the shortest journey.
Since one in four car crashes involving children are side impact collisions, the Kettering University Crash Safety Centre conducted the first ever side impact tests and as a result manufactured a unique care seat focused entirely on protecting our baby’s heads – the Safety 1st® Complete Air™ Convertible Car Seat with Air Protect™ Side Impact Technology. The seat can be used rear-facing for babes from five to 40 lbs and 19 to 40 inches and forward facing for toddlers and preschooler from 22 to 50 lbs and 24 to 45 inches, so it potentially works for kids from birth to school age. Making the $299 price tag quite reasonable if you consider the cost-per-ride spread over five years.
Air Protect™ was engineered to defend your child in two vital ways. During a crash, the system immediately shields your child’s head from the impact. In a second layer of defence, Air Protect™ allows air to escape from the headrest: channelling crash energy away from your child. While we haven’t put it to the long term baby test, we have checked it out and played with it in person and not only are we rather enamoured of the side impact cushions but the other great features are the simple adjustable harness system that cuts down on tugging and yanking and the car installation clips, making it an enticing new option on the market.
And since 85% of car seats are installed or used incorrectly, why not swing by one of BCAA’s child seat checks before your babe arrives?
