brooding on bottoms

The dictionary might define broody as “moody; gloomy” or “inclined to sit on eggs” but as far as we’re concerned the new definition should read “mum who creates an eco-friendly disposable diaper (that rivals and perhaps surpasses anything on the market) right here in our own back yard.” Because Broody Chick’s fully compostable diapers could redefine the way you think of disposables.

Choosing diapers can be a fraught decision, but whether your disposable diaper needs are frequent, occasional or very rare we think these are a great new alternative. The creation of a Vancouver Island mama, Broody Chick’s diapers contain fully compostable material from annually renewable resources, cutting down on greenhouse gases. They’re chlorine-free, breathable, hypo-allergenic and fragrance-free with natural absorbers. And Broody Chick’s eco-commitment extends to every aspect of their packaging, which is recycled cardboard printed with plant-based dyes and biodegradable plastic bags. You can get all the green details – and they’re myriad – here.

And that’s all well and good, but functionality is as important as eco-credibility when it comes to diapers so we put them to a hard-wearing toddler test which they passed with flying colours. Our little tester was described as having a “very active digestive system” but Broody Chick’s diapers were up to the task.  The weight range on the packaging was an accurate guide to fit, they were “slim fitting” as promised and remained leak-free both day and night. And our tester’s mama appreciated that they can be composted or otherwise disposed of, though not flushed down the toilet. She also felt the eco-friendliness was worth their price-point, which is higher than “regular” disposables but on par with other, higher-end,  “greener” offerings.

Broody Chick also makes compostable wipes that are hypo-allergenic and chlorine-, fragrance- and chemical-free. And the resealable package stands up to repeated use.

Rumour has it that the diapers and wipes will go from soiled to soil in just 90 day, keeping everything in your own back yard. So to speak. . .

Is there anywhere to buy these locally? They seem like a great item but would rather buy at a store then online.
    Thanks.

Hi Tamara – I only know where they’re sold online but if you go to their site I think they sell them at the following “real” locations: http://www.broodychick.com/index.php?main_page=page_3

    Thanks,
    Annemarie

I just saw the Broody Chick wipes are now available at Famous Foods (in East Van). I didn’t see the diapers, but I’m sure it’s only a matter of time!

A new baby/childrens clothing and accessory store at Main and 17th will carry the full line of Broody Chick. Main Street Baby, brought to you by The Granville Island Toy Company is expected to open in the next week. Check out their website for the exact opening date. They’re also on facebook.

I love this product! We live in Qualicum Beach and you can get these diapers all over the place on the island. I know Thrifty Foods carries them as well as a few health food stores, for example Naked Naturals in Parksville. The Boody Balm bum cream is so awesome too, we use it every night on our twins and they smell so great!
