by your leave

There are a lot of things to plan for when you’re pregnant. You have a nursery to set up, strollers and car seats to research and lots of appointments to book with your doctor or midwife. And then there’s the very un-sexy but extremely important issue of sorting out your maternity leave benefits.
Local mama-of-two and blogger Amber Strocel is one of those mums we love. She saw a gap in the market and set out to fill it. What started out as Mat Leave Monday series on her blog during her first maternity leave has become a self-proclaimed “quick, completely non-authoritative guide to maternity leave.”
Though only eight pages, this extremely comprehensive e-book is available to anyone who signs up for Strocel’s occasional email updates, which are, as Strocel herself says, “totally riveting, I promise. Although if you disagree you can, of course, unsubscribe at any time.”
Written in Strocel’s quippy style, she recognizes that many people find the government information difficult to understand and navigate (we can identify!) and need a brief, easy-to-read guide to help them get started. As well as all the facts you need to know, including a very handy flow chart, it’s also scattered with interesting tidbits of info. For instance “Canada’s first maternity leave law was introduced in BC in 1921. The Maternity Protection Act of 1921 prohibited employers from employing women in the 6 weeks following childbirth.”
The book ends with links to more maternity leave issues Strocel has covered in her blog including that most stressful topic for the self-employed among us – maternity leave and the self-employed.
We’d highly recommend you peruse the Quick Guide to Maternity Leave before you delve into the murkier waters of government websites or your company’s HR department.
