toothy grin

Any mama who’s spent significant time in the dentist’s chair in her youth would not wish the same fate on her tots.  We all know that brushing is the backbone of good dental care, which is why Philips Sonicare has just introduced a power toothbrush for kids from four to 12.

We weren’t sure if this was a good idea or a bit of overkill, so we checked with our own dentist. He was all for them as they encourage kids to brush longer, they get kids’ teeth a bit cleaner than a regular brush and they’re a good options for kids who want to do everything by themselves. So we put the Sonicare for Kids to the test.

It comes with two different heads, one for kids from four to seven, the second head for kids from seven to 10. It has also two different power modes, a low mode for the under seven set and a high mode for older kids. But what we liked best about it – after we got it all set up and sorted out – was that it plays a little tune when it’s time to move onto brushing a different quadrant of your child’s mouth, making brushing more fun and helping kids understand how long they need to brush for. And that’s a lot longer than you’d think!

“It’s SO fun!” declared our toothy little tester whose previous opinions about tooth brushing had been distinctly unenthusiastic. We discovered the hard way that it’s best to wait to turn the toothbrush on until it’s in your child’s mouth, thus avoiding spraying toothpaste all around your bathroom. And although part of the appeal is that it allows your child to be more independent, we think it works best for younger kids if you continue to do the brushing.

Admittedly at $69.99 it’s not cheap, but we like to think of it as an investment that will pay off when our children (hopefully!) need less dental work in the future.
