actively crafty

As September draws to a close we can take a deep breath. Our kids are getting settled into their new classrooms, new activities and new schedules. So why not use these new activities as inspiration for getting crafty with your kids this fall:

For the aspiring gymnast: Roll a piece of poster paper out on the floor until it’s as long as your child. Have them to lie down on the paper in their favourite gymnastics pose – anything from a ‘V’ sit to a hand stand to randomly flailing arms and legs. Trace their image and then let them colour themselves in and accessorize.  Cut the picture out and hang it on their door or in their room. Tip: if they need more space to pose, tape two pieces of paper side by side, so it’s wide enough to trace a jumping jack or the splits.

For the soccer fanatic: Use two identical paper plates with white undersides to make a paper plate soccer ball ornament.  Cut eight to 10 pentagon shapes from black construction paper.  Glue four or five pentagons evenly spaced on the underside of each plate, then connect the corners of each pentagon to the ones around it with a black crayon or marker. Finish it up by flipping both plates right side up, glue around the edge of one plate, and sandwich other plate on top of first, tucking loose ends of a folded ribbon in between.  Let plates dry and then hang using the ribbon.

For the hockey star: Use an old hockey stick to make a hockey stick growth chart. Paint it with acrylic paints and once it’s dry, with a tape measure and felt pen make height markings along the length of the stick.  Your first marking at the base of the stick should be 1 or 1.5 ft.  Once markings are complete, hang your stick, ensuring that the first marking (1 or 1.5ft) matches the actual height of the stick from the ground.  Adhere to wall using Velcro, or screw right into the wall.  You’ll be measuring your budding hockey player for years to come!

Thanks to Keri Zingle from Craft Caravan for the inspiration. And in light of the recent water bottle brouhaha we have a bottle-themed craft from her in our blog: www.craftcaravan.com
