naturally stocked

Chances are you started the summer with a fully stocked medicine cabinet. Band-aids. Check. Antibiotic ointment. Check. Antiseptic wipes. Check.

But now summer’s more than half over (gulp!), back to school ads are popping up everywhere and your medicine cabinet probably has some serious gaps in it. So here are some ideas for how to restock it, naturally:

DermaMed Ointment: Canadian company DermaMed is known for their natural, therapeutic products including a well-regarded children’s line. Their all-purpose ointment can be used to protect skin from everything from chafing to dryness. Keep it on hand to soothe rashes, hives and those funny skin ailments that affect your kids when it’s hot, muggy and buggy.

Boiron Arnica Gel: Arnica Gel is our new mummy must-have. It soothes muscle aches, bumps and bruises by reducing pain, swelling and discoloration. And it works all this magic homeopathically. We’ve been using it liberally on all the goose eggs our tots have been accumulating this summer. But never use it on broken skin. And unless you’ve consulted your doctor, it’s only recommended for kids over two.

All Terrain EcoGuard Bandages: We’re enamoured of these latex-free bandages made from recycled or recyclable material. They contain no chemicals and use water-based adhesives and natural, food-grade colours and pigments. So they’re naturally useful while still coming in fun prints and patterns. Here’s our follow up review of Herbal Armor’s bug repellant that we introduced you to earlier this summer as well.

And why not stay on theme and apply pressure to cuts or rub in all your natural lotions and potions with Organic Essentials Cotton Balls? Finally, may we suggest storing some stickers in your medicine cabinet as well. All the better to reward your little summer adventurers for their bravery in face of adversity and owies.

All these products are all available in the Whole Body Department at Whole Foods Market.

Yes, do NOT use it on open skin. I made a mistake once and grabbed the Arnica instead of the Calendula (a Boiron item that didn’t make this list but is a MUST HAVE in our medicine chest for cuts, scrapes, and diaper rash) – my little guy suffered greatly for my mistake. It stung so much – he was in tears and so was I when I realized I had caused it!
