move it
Filed Under Going Green, Tips & Tricks | August 28, 2009
Vancouver’s a city where families are constantly on the move, especially with the real estate slump apparently a thing of the past. Whether you’re going from a rental into a duplex or from a condo into a house, moving is a big adjustment for the whole family. So we’ve got a few tips and ideas on how to make it easier on your kids, and thus you:
- In the lead up to the move teach your child about moving through play. Blocks make great moving boxes and any dolls or action figures can stand in for your family as you guide them through what will happen and what moving is about.
- Before the big day take your child to your new abode and let them explore and poke about. And as soon as you can after moving, explore the new ‘hood keeping an eye out for playgrounds, libraries and community centres.
- Change is hard for little kids, so if you’re able to set up their new room as closely as possible to the layout of their old room it will reassure them. We’ve even heard that you shouldn’t wash their sheets right before you move, instead put familiar-smelling (aka dirty) sheets on their crib or bed in their new home. And let them help pick the paint colour and decorate their new room.
- Your tot’s daily routine grounds them, so firmly follow established home routines – everything from familiar foods to regular bedtimes – faithfully for the first few months after you move.
You can also make moving greener – and easier – with local company FrogBox. They rent plastic totes and wardrobes which they’ll drop off for you to pack, you move it all, and they pick them up once you’ve moved. So no more scrounging for cardboard boxes, which can only be used a few times anyhow, unlike the FrogBoxes plastic boxes which can be used about 400 times before they’re recycled. Now if only someone would magically sort and pack everything you’d be set.
