snack-a-licious

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. Our goal is to sustain our kids with nutritious, healthy, well-balanced snacks. However our reality doesn’t always live up to our high expectations of ourselves. So we like to have snack options on hand that make up for our shortcomings in the snack department. Which is why we’ve added Little Tree Foods’ Tutu Bars to our arsenal of snacks.

Tutu Bars are the creation of local mamas Lindsey Boyle and Rachel Johns. When they couldn’t find snack options which met their own high standards – nutritious, perfectly sized for little hands and safe – they adopted Lindsey’s grandmother’s recipe for organic oat bars. The result are these handy, trans fat-free snack bars made from organic whole grains like oats and spelt with no added salt and very little sugar. Why Tutu Bars? That was Lindsey’s grandmother’s name.

A variety of kids from eight months to six year put their Spelt bars to the taste test and they made the cut with each and every one. They were tasty enough for the six-year-old and easy for the eight-month-old to hold. Plus they don’t have any large chunks that could cause a choking hazard. We even tried them ourselves and while we must admit we found them a titch bland, we’d still eat them in a low-blood-sugar pinch.

We also appreciate that they’re made locally in small batches and they’re packaged in natural kraft bags lined with PLA, a renewable and compostable film. Next on our list to try are their Banana and Carrot bars because with pre-school snack packing season fast approaching we plan to stock up.

Want to try them? You’ll find Little Tree Foods at the Coquitlam Farmers Market this weekend or you can stop by Beans Coffee & Tea on Cambie to snag some. And they take special orders as well.
